Science Communication Workshops
Are you a scientist working in Queensland?
Do you want to tailor your communication about your research (oral and written) in a more effective way? Do you need to engage with difference audiences such as media, grant funding bodies/investors, and the wider community to achieve expected outcomes?
The science communication workshops in the renewed Queensland Talking Scientists Program may be the answer.
Funded by the Science Division of the Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts, these workshops (valued at $500 per participant) will be available to scientists who work in Queensland. These one-day workshops will focus on the following key areas:
- General communication skills (media communication and community/stakeholder engagement)
- Writing (getting to the point of the science you are involved in your work, understanding what is required for mediums such as media, web and social media, and grant applications)
- Pitching (science of story-telling, elevator pitches, oral communication skills, and media interview skills)
- Cultural competency (top tips for communicating to international audience including potential Chinese and Indian investors as examples)
Due to limited places in these workshops, you are asked to contribute a deposit of $88, which will be refunded to you in full once you complete the workshop.
FAQs
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The EcoSciences Precinct (ESP) is conveniently located 100m from the Boggo Road Busway and Park Road Railway Station. There is a walkway from these public transport hubs to the ESP. Up-to-date bus and train timetables can be found at www.translink.com.au or by calling 13 12 30. Bus Numbers 109, 169 and 209 stop at the Boggo Road Busway. The Gold Coast/Airport, Beenleigh/Ferny Grove and Cleveland lines all stop at the Park Road Railway Station.
There is limited (2 hour) parking in side streets around the venue.
What do I do when I arrive at the ESP?
Report to the front security desk to sign in. You will be given a visitor badge. Please wear this during your time on site and return it to security at the end of the day.
How many people will be in the workshop?
A maximum of 15, to allow all participants to be interviewed by journalists and practice some of the techniques taught in the workshop.
Will there be refreshments provided?
Yes. Morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea are provided.
When will I receive my deposit back?
A few days after attending the workshop. If you do not attend the workshop, your deposit will be withheld.
What is the refund policy?
If you cancel more than 2 weeks before the workshop date, your deposit will be returned.
If you cancel less than 2 weeks before the workshop date, you lose your deposit unless you can find someone to take your place, or the organisers can find a replacement for you from the waiting list.
